10 Major Emmy Surprises and Snubs This Year

Like any award season, there is always speculation as to who should get nominated, what show is more deserving of being nominated than the other, and the typical rankings of shows and performances to assess who may or may not get nominated. However, much of that speculation is subjective and once the nominations are announced it places all award categories in context. Therefore, here is a list of surprises and snubs based on my personal Emmy nomination predictions.

1. Surprise: Parks and Recreation nominated for Best Comedy Series

Parks and Recreation

The show hasn’t been nominated since its second season and managed to snag a surprise nomination for Best Comedy Series with its last season.

2. Snub: The Affair completely shut out of the Emmys

The Affair

Last January, The Affair, as well as lead actress, Ruth Wilson, won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series. Neither Wilson, Dominic West (who was also nominated for a Golden Globe) or the show were nominated for anything.

3. Surprise: Tatiana Maslany for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Orphan Black

Orphan Black

It seems that Emmy voters have finally listened to fans of Orphan Black, who have cried foul for two years when Maslany has failed to grab a nomination.

4. Snub: No nominations for Jim Parsons or Julianna Margulies

Jim Parsons

Last year’s winners in the leading categories of drama and comedy have both found themselves snubbed this year. This is especially surprising for Jim Parsons, who has dominated the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category for years, winning four times out of the last six years.

5. Surprise: Liev Schreiber for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Ray Donovan

Liev Schreiber

The veteran actor has always been over shadowed by other big-name actors, but now Schreiber finally can compete for the big prize. This is particularly surprising considering his snub in this category last year.

6. Snub: No nomination for Gina Rodriguez or Ellie Kemper in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category

Ellie Kemper

Despite winning the Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series back in January for Jane the Virgin, it’s now evident that Gina Rodriguez’s performance failed to impress Emmy voters this award season. More shocking is Ellie Kemper’s Emmy snub for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a show that hinged entirely on her performance.

7. Surprise: American Horror Story dominates the acting categories

freak show

American Horror Story: Freak Show managed to grab a total of six acting nominations in the TV Movie and Limited Series categories: Best Lead Actress for Jessica Lange, Best Supporting Actress for Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett, and Best Supporting Actor for Finn Wittrock and Denis O’Hare.

8. Snub: The Missing grossly snubbed in the Limited Series categories

Despite stellar reviews and a Golden Globe nomination for the series and its lead actress (Frances O’Connor), The Missing received only one nomination for Best Direction.

9. Surprise: Lisa Kudrow for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for The Comeback

Lisa Kudrow

Lisa Kudrow managed to grab herself a nomination for the second season of The Comeback, a show whose first season concluded back in 2005. Many speculated whether the nine-year hiatus would be damaging to the show’s chances of being nominated, but clearly Lisa Kudrow shined through with another season of the hilarious “reality-show” mockumentary.

10. Snub: No room for veteran actors this year

Judith Light

Big-name recognition wasn’t applicable this year with actors and actresses, many of whom were expected to be nominated, only to find themselves snubbed instead. Among those is Jane Fonda for Grace and Frankie, who most were predicting she was the “guarantee” nomination of the year. Also from Grace and Frankie was the double snub of Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen, who many thought one or the other would be nominated for playing the husbands who leave their wives to embark on a relationship together. Another was Sissy Spacek for Bloodline, which all critics and pundits (myself included) unanimously predicted she would be nominated in the Supporting Actress category. However, the most glaring of snubs is Maggie Smith, who failed to get a nomination in the Supporting Actress category, a category that she has dominated for years. The other is Judith Light for Transparent, who gained as much acclaim for her performance as the show’s leading actor, Jeffrey Tambor. Of all these veteran snubs, Maggie Smith’s and Judith Light’s are the most glaring.

  1. Great article… you made some great points, like The Affair.

For me, I think Ellie Kemper was robbed. She’s the glue on Unbreakable Kimmy Scmidt. Her 2 costars are nominated. So, come on. Kemper is the female equivalent of Jim Carrey. Give it a shot, folks. Plus, this show was so fun to review on my site. Just pure hilarity… and no sitcom laughtrack. 😉
